United Cree Economy

The Canadian Indian Reservation System isolated all First Nations leaving us a legacy of impoverishment and under-development.

We must unite the economies of Eeyou Istchee:

  • Prioritize Cree companies before we call on non-Cree companies to come into our market;

  • Ensure the prioritization of Cree companies and workers as per section 28 of the JBNQA;

  • Ensure that it is not private companies who decide who has access to the Cree market.

Principle

A united Cree Nation economy will always be more powerful than nine separate Cree economies. The Cree Governments must create an environment where our own companies can defend themselves and compete fairly.

Call to Action

The approval and implementation of the Cree Nation Prioritization Agreement is critical to the ability of the Cree Nation to ensure the prioritization of local labour and companies in discussions with developers, the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada.

Principle

A united Cree Nation economy must be built on the principle that private sector investment needs to come to our communities.

Calls to Action

  • Reward the partners of Cree entrepreneurs for investing in a Cree community and truly supporting their Cree partner.

  • Encourage companies and firms that provide services to the Cree Nation to invest in and establish businesses in Eeyou Istchee.

Principle

A unified Cree Nation economy will generate a Cree market that cannot be ignored by private companies that unilaterally decide who can sell or distribute products in Eeyou Istchee.

Call to Action

The Cree Nation Government will need to come to the defence of Cree entrepreneurs who are told they cannot open a franchise or company in a community because the Cree market already belongs to someone else.
