The Communities of Eeyou Istchee continue to face challenges of:
Safety
Housing shortages
Lack of local employment and development opportunities
The financial resources in relation to housing and justice exist at the Cree Nation Government today and are not being used. Failure to use these funds immediately, efficiently and responsibly will hurt us in future Government negotiations.
Social problems are related to economic status and our governments have financial resources to increase the safety of our communities and personal wealth of our families.
Principle
The Cree Nation Private Housing Fund, in combination with commitments from financial institutions to treat potential Cree homeowners equitably, could alleviate the housing crisis and increase the personal wealth of Cree families.
Calls to Action
Distribution of the Cree Nation Private Housing Fund at the regional and local level to promote greater access.
Educating financial institutions on the unique legal context of Eeyou Istchee to put an end to Band counter guarantees and promote the offering of competitive mortgages to our members.
Principle
Unlocking the Cree Nation Private Housing Fund and coordination with financial institutions could result in a $600M housing construction boom in Eeyou Istchee decreasing our reliance on natural resource development projects for employment.
Call to Action
The establishment at all levels of government of a prioritization of local labour and local contractors. Every other economy in the world prioritizes itself, why aren’t we?
Principle
Preventative justice programs and the empowerment of local governments in the administration of justice could significantly increase the safety of our communities.
Calls to Action
Development of an emergency preventative justice program which includes the distribution of funds to local governments to develop innovative local projects and programs.
The granting of new powers to local governments in the enforcement of local infractions to alleviate the court system for serious crimes.
