Accountability and Transparency

ᐁ ᑯᐃᔅᑯᐦᑖᓂᐎᒡ

Leadership is defined by the ability to bring people together and find a common path.

This cannot happen without accountability or transparency:

  • Leaders cannot place themselves in a conflict of interest.

  • The people of the Cree Nation must have access to the information upon which leaders are basing their decisions.

  • There can be NO SECRETS.

  • There must be a way to hold leaders accountable for their decisions during their mandate.

Principle

The Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief must give up any economic interests that could influence their decision making.

Call to Action

  • The General Law of the GCC(EI)/CNG should be amended to obligate all future Grand Chiefs and Deputy Grand Chiefs to give up any economic interests that could influence their decisions.

If elected, I will have an audit confirm that I have given up all economic interests in the law firm I created 20 years ago. I do not believe that placing shares in a Trust is enough.

Principle

Under the Cree Constitution, local Chiefs and Councillors can be removed from office during their mandate. Even the Prime Minister of Canada can be subject to a vote of non-Confidence. Currently the Grand Chief is immune from such actions.

Call to Action

  • An amendment to the General Law of the Cree Nation Government to allow for a vote of non-confidence in the Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief. No leader should have immunity.

Principle

The people of the Cree Nation should have a clear and simple process for accessing information. For there to be unity and trust between leaders there can be No Secrets.

Calls to Action

Adoption of a Cree Nation Government Access to Information Act:

    1. Giving the public of the Cree Nation access to information without asking for permission.

    2. Requiring all correspondence coming into the Office of Grand Chief or coming from the Office of Grand Chief be shared with the entire Board/Council.
